BAHT

BAHT Education Sub-Committee (ESC) - Role

Aims to promote and facilitate post graduate hand therapy education. Validated courses are provided at Level I and II for qualified physio-therapists and occupational therapists to gain
BAHT
points towards becoming an Accredited Hand Therapists (BAHT). Therapists can undertake research or further study and submit it for their Level III points.

The BAHT Education sub-committee has also developed a system for accrediting therapists’ prior learning and this may be a route more experienced therapists will choose to become an Accredited Hand Therapist (BAHT). Another route may be through completing MSc modules and so far courses run at Liverpool and Derby Universities have been validated by the Education sub-committee. This is the route chosen by three of the present Accredited Hand Therapists (BAHT).

BAHT Postgraduate Education
A structure is in place for hand therapists to further their education. This involves:

Level 1: A three-day basic hand therapy course with a one-hour written examination gives 1 BAHT point.

Level II: A three day course on a specific aspect of hand therapy. Completion of the course, a one-hour examination and an assignment will give you 2 BAHT points. 6 points (i.e. three Level II courses in different subjects) are required for accreditation.

Level III: A new piece of work in an area of hand therapy, involving 60 hours minimum study. Assessment is by two independent assessors. Successful completion gives 5 BAHT points.

BAHT Educator Points: BAHT Educator points can be accrued by lecturing on BAHT validated courses. Nine hours of lecturing on different topics will provide the therapists with the equivalent of 2 BAHT points.

For further information of BAHT accredited courses that are being run at present go to the ESC course outlines page

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
APL is a process by which therapists can gain BAHT credit points based on evidence of their past learning

Level 1: 2 years experience in Hand Therapy will give 1 point at Level 1

Level II: Each 2 points can be sought in 3 different specialist fields of hand therapy. Submissions will involve a portfolio to give evidence of prior learning supported by a long and a short case study.

Level III: 5 points can be sought with the submission of a portfolio to give evidence of prior learning, supported by a written paper. This can take the form of a review of pertinent literature, an employment based report or a research project.
