The University of Essex is a public research university in Essex, England. Established in 1963, welcomed students in 1964, and acquired university status by royal charter in 1965
Therapists can undertake standalone MSc modules related to hand therapy or can complete specific modules enabling delegates to gain 12 points towards the British Association of Hand Therapists Accreditation process or Essex University is now able to offer an exciting opportunity to support career development to Advanced Practice through our MSc pathway.
Following development of two new modules, scheduled to commence from Spring 2023, they are able to offer Hand Therapists a choice of Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and full MSc award. The MSc pathway is the first one of its kind incorporating injection therapy.
The new modules offer more flexibility and choice of study within the popular PGCert in Hand Therapy, successful completion of which awards therapists 12 BAHT points towards Accredited Hand Therapist Qualification.
The MSc structure aligns to the 4 pillars of advanced practice as denoted in the Multiprofessional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (HEE 2017 https://advanced-practice.hee.nhs.uk/).
Below provides a summary of the modules and awards that can be achieved via the University of Essex:
- Postgraduate Certificate Advanced Musculoskeletal Assessment and Practice - Hand Therapy (60 credits at level 7)
30 credits, made up of any two of the following 4 modules:
- SE714 - Soft Tissue and Joint Injection Therapy (15 credits)
- SE717 - Advanced Musculoskeletal Assessment (15 credits)
- SE783 - Current concepts in upper limb rehabilitation (15 credits)
- SE784 - Medication use in Musculoskeletal Management and Rehabilitation (15 credits)
AND CORE Component
- SE731 – Leading Change in Healthcare (30 credits)
On completion of the specific modules above to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate Advanced Musculoskeletal Assessment and Practice - Hand Therapy students will also achieve all 12 points towards BAHT accreditation. Successful delegates are eligible to directly apply to become an Accredited Hand Therapist (AHT), providing they meet the other requirements for this award. - MSc – Advanced Musculoskeletal Assessment and Practice – Hand Therapy (180 credits at level 7) includes:

New modules commence spring 2023 however therapists can enrol on current modules to start their pathways. Please note, that assessment components of all modules must relate to Hand Therapy for these awards.
